The Intent, implementation and Impact of our Curriculum -PE

Subject Leader: Mr M Fisher

Intent

‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.’  Department of Education, National Curriculum

At HOSM Primary School, our aim is to provide a PE curriculum that is safe and supportive, which enables each child to reach their full potential in physical and emotional development and maintain good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of a team, understand fairness of play and to embed a sporting and positive attitude towards sport and a healthy lifestyle.

Implementation

In order to achieve our aims, we will:

  • Provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities.
  • Provide two PE lessons each week (one by the teacher and one by external coaches – see below) covering the requirements of the national curriculum.
  • Teach the PE curriculum mainly using ‘Primary Steps in PE’, an innovative scheme of work which provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities. The scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school, including detailed lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and videos to help teach specific skills.
  • Enhance the curriculum by giving pupils the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular PE and sports activities run by teachers and external coaches.
  • Enhance the curriculum further by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area, enabling an increased participation in competitive sport. These events develop teamwork and leadership skills and a sporting ethos towards each other and opponents.
  • Provide swimming lessons for children in Years 3 and 4 once a week for 10 weeks. Children therefore receive 20 weeks of swimming over the course of KS2.
  • Run special event days, including annual Sports Days which include the whole school. (Separate sports days for FS1, FS2, KS1 and KS2) The emphasis on sports days is split between team events, where pupils work with each other to help their team perform as well as possible, and individual events, where pupils have the opportunity to compete at their highest standard for individual success.
  • Ensure staff attend PE sessions and CPD led by external coaches in order to observe, participate and ‘upskill’ themselves in PE teaching.

Impact

  • Children understand the importance of Physical Education and take responsibility for their own health and fitness.
  • Children are motivated to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun.
  • Children engage in clubs both at school and in the wider community and participate in competitive sport.
  • Children develop skills such as cooperation, collaboration and teamwork as well as understanding fairness of play and a positive sporting attitude towards each other and opponents.
  • Children grow up to live healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
